A rational person might wonder when President Barack Obama and his gun control pals will finally get it: All the rules in the world will not keep criminals from getting or misusing firearms and punishing the law-abiding does absolutely no good.
Obama, unable to get Congress to trash the Second Amendment earlier this year, has come up with new proposed rules to short-circuit the reimport of military surplus weapons and require background checks for corporations and trusts registering guns.
Under the new proposals, reimported surplus weapons – guns made here and shipped elsewhere – can go only to museums and a few other entities, such as the government, and people associated with corporations or trusts seeking registration of short-barrel shotguns or automatic weapons – guns, it turns out, that rarely are used in crimes – must face the same type of fingerprint-based background checks as individuals.
If nothing else, the new proposed rules are prime examples of what politicians do when they run out of ideas.
The new rules will accomplish nothing. Bad guys who want guns will get them. Criminals get guns even in police states.
Instead of showboating for his liberal base and trying to drum up a campaign issue for next year, if Obama truly were serious about curbing gun crime and keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and others who should not have them, he would order the strict and swift enforcement of laws already on the books. That certainly is not done today.
Instead, Obama is seeking more ways to abridge the rights of law-abiding gun owners.
What can you expect from a guy with such little respect for the Constitution?
