Silencers

On the heels of the deadly Virginia Beach shooting, the Left did what the Left does – it politicized the tragedy and is using it to further its agenda.

A city employee walked room to room in municipal offices, using a .45-caliber handgun with a silencer, or suppressor, to murder 12 people. Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam immediately called for more gun control, including a ban on silencers, and President Trump now has signaled he may “seriously look at” banning them.

Like most gun control, banning silencers would do absolutely nothing to reduce crime in this nation. Nothing.

There were, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says, 1,489,791 silencers registered with the federal government in the U.S. last year.

The agency told the Washington Free Beacon in 2017 that silencers rarely are used in crimes despite their rising popularity.

“The agency has only recommended prosecutions for 44 silencer-related crimes per year over the past decade’” the website reported. “That means roughly .003 percent of silencers are used in crimes each year. Of those 44 crimes per year, only 6 involved defendants with prior felony convictions.”

They are so rarely used in crime an agency associate director even argued in 2017 that they should be deregulated, the website reports, because they did not present a danger and the paperwork to regulate them was taking far too much of the agency’s time.

Despite Hollywood’s notion of what a silencer does, they do not completely reduce the report of a shot, but they do dampen it enough to reduce hearing damage. A .45 ACP report is about 157 decibels, give or take, enough to damage hearing. Suppressor manufacturer Silencerco says its Hybrid 46 silencer, for instance, reduces the blast to 130.8. You certainly can still hear the report, even if it is “silenced.” OSHA requires workplace hearing protection at about 85 decibels.

None of that means anything to the Left. Facts and reality are meaningless if they clash with its dogma. It sees any tragedy simply as an opening to further its aim to restrict Americans’ rights.

Hopefully, Northam’s demand will by ignored by Virginia legislators and Trump will come to his senses before yet another right is usurped.
