How big a danger?
A 41-year-old man accused of vehicular mayhem on the Seward Highway – and facing multiple charges, including vehicle theft, assault, robbery and resisting arrest – was granted bail.
Our question: Why?
Police say Lance C. Harrington stole a pickup in Anchorage, rammed an SUV in Turnagain Pass, carjacked a Palmer man in another vehicle and crashed it and then tried to steal a third.
The hours-long chaos closed the Seward Highway. Luckily, nobody was seriously injured or killed in the craziness.
Despite the seriousness of the episode, District Court Judge Brian Clark set Harrington’s bail at $10,000 cash-corporate appearance bond and $1,000 cash performance, with house arrest monitored by the state Pretrial Enforcement Division.
We are left to wonder: How big a threat to public safety you must be before a judge will keep you behind bars?
